Amsterdam is the capital the and most populous city of Netherlands which is found within the province of North Holland with a population of the 872,680, 1,380,872 and 2,410,960 in the city area, urban area and the metropolitan area respectively. Colloquially Amsterdam is also referred to as the Venice of the North which is ascribed by the large number of canals which form the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The name Amsterdam is derivative from the Amstelredamme indicative of the city's derivation around a dam in the river Amstel. From being a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam originated and became one of the most important ports in the world and a leading center for finance and trade during Dutch Golden Age. Later on, the city expanded, and many new neighborhoods and suburbs were planned and built in the 19th and 20th centuries.
